December is one of the best times of the year to visit Thailand.
Your home might be snowing, but in Thailand, December brings mild weather and clear skies. Most regions are dry, though some beaches on the Gulf of Thailand (like Koh Samui) may still get a few showers.
December is Thailand's peak season, lively with Christmas and New Year celebrations, bringing more lines and crowds. That's the only drawback…but we'll share a few hints to help you enjoy a more personal and relaxed experience.
Weather and Climate in Thailand in December
December sits right in the heart of Thailand's dry, cool season (November to February), bringing warm sunshine and clear blue skies almost everywhere.

The northern and central regions are warm and dry, with average daytime temperatures between 26–32°C (79–90°F). The farther north you go, the cooler it gets. Chiang Mai's evenings can drop to around 15°C (59°F). Bangkok sees almost no rain, and Chiang Mai usually only 1 rainy day all month.
Down south, the weather splits between two coasts.
The Andaman side (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi) enjoys perfect beach weather. Seas are calm, skies are clear. Temperatures range from 24–31°C ( 75–88°F). Even when it rains, showers are brief, just 6–8 short spells a month.
Meanwhile, the Gulf Coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) can still get occasional rain. Temperatures stay mild, 24–29°C (75–84°F), with up to 15 rainy days, though most showers last only 30–60 minutes and ease up closer to Christmas and New Year.
Take a look at the average temperatures throughout Thailand below to get an idea of what to expect for your trip.
| Location | Average High | Average Low | Rainy Days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bangkok | 31°C / 88°F | 21°C / 70°F | 0 day |
| Chiang Mai | 28°C / 82°F | 15°C / 59°F | 1 day |
| Phuket | 31°C / 88°F | 24°C / 75°F | 8 days |
| Krabi | 31°C / 88°F | 23°C / 73°F | 10 days |
| Koh Samui | 29°C / 84°F | 24°C / 75°F | 14 days |

From my trip last December:
When I was in Bangkok, it stayed warm and even hot every single day, around 30–31°C. My jeans and jacket never left my suitcase. In Chiang Mai, mornings and evenings were much cooler, and I usually wore two layers before switching to a T-shirt by noon. On New Year's Eve, we joined a countdown in the countryside, and it got surprisingly cold, just chilly enough for a light down jacket.
How Crowded and Expensive Is Thailand in December?
Let's be upfront: Yes, December is Thailand's peak tourist season. That means two things: more crowds and higher prices, especially around Christmas and New Year.
But with the right planning, you can still have an incredible trip and even find your own quiet corners.
The Crowd Scene (What to Expect & How to Beat It)
Khao San Road, Bangkok is crowded in Dec.Let's be honest — December in Thailand is lively, crowded, and full of energy.
Famous spots like Bangkok's Grand Palace, Chiang Mai's night markets, Phuket's Patong Beach, and the Phi Phi Islands can feel a bit like Times Square on New Year's Eve. Expect queues at major sights, packed beaches, and fully booked hotels.
Still, there are smart ways around it — and that's where we come in.
- In Bangkok, skip the morning temple rush (lines can last an hour) and start with a quiet long-tail boat ride through Thonburi. Visit the Grand Palace after 1 PM, when most tour groups are gone.
- In Chiang Mai, swap the packed Sunday Market for the Saturday one on Wua Lai Road or the laid-back Chang Puak Night Market.
- In Phuket, avoid the touristy Phi Phi tours and head to the Similan Islands instead — clearer water, fewer crowds.
Of course, not everywhere is packed. If you're after a slower pace, Koh Lanta, Koh Chang, or Chiang Rai in the north offer all the charm without the chaos.
Traveling in the first two weeks of December is also a smart move, when prices are lower and the country hasn't yet hit full holiday frenzy.
The Cost in December
With the festive buzz comes the price tag.
Compared with the shoulder seasons (February–March or October), you'll likely spend 30–50% more overall, with flights and hotels showing the biggest jumps.
Prices vary by region — milder in Bangkok, sharper up north, and steepest on the islands.
Here's a quick look at how much prices can rise in December:
| Region / Type | Average Price Increase | What to Expect |
|---|---|---|
| Bangkok | 30% - 60% | Luxury hotels with rooftop bars surge for NYE; mid-range options stay reasonable |
| Chiang Mai | 40% - 80% | Limited boutique hotels = higher demand and sharper jumps |
| Phuket | 50% - 100%+ | Beachfront resorts often double or triple rates |
| Koh Samui | 60% - 120%+ | High-end villas and resorts skyrocket around Christmas–New Year |
| Domestic flights | 20–40% | Especially on Bangkok–Phuket and Bangkok–Chiang Mai routes |
| International flights (Europe/US → Thailand) | 100%+ | Seats sell out fast for the holiday period |
These aren't just numbers — you'll feel the difference.
For example, at Katathani Phuket Beach Resort, a favorite among our travelers, rates rise from about $280/night in November to $370/night in early December, and can exceed $900/night on Christmas Eve.
Budget Planning Advice:
- Book early: Reserve flights and hotels 3–6 months in advance to secure the best deals and availability.
- Watch your dates: Traveling just a few days before or after Christmas or New Year can save you hundreds.
- Consider alternatives: If Phuket or Koh Samui stretch your budget, try Krabi or Koh Lanta instead.
- Celebrate up north: Chiang Mai offers a cheaper (and cozier) holiday, with no mandatory gala dinners like many southern resorts.

The Best Places to Visit in Thailand in December
For first-timers, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and one island make the perfect Thailand trio. But the island you choose will largely shape your trip's vibe.
Even if it's not your first visit, each destination still has plenty of surprises waiting for you in this month.
1. Bangkok – Vibrant and Festive Lights
New Year fireworks over the Chao Phraya River in BangkokDecember is Bangkok at its best. The air is warm but not sticky, making it comfortable to explore temples and markets without breaking a sweat.
The city also comes alive with holiday sparkle.
If you love a grand spectacle, the ICONSIAM fireworks are unmissable. The atmosphere is amazing, but it gets really crowded. So we recommend you book a riverside hotel or a premium dinner cruise months in advance for a stress-free, front-row experience.
Prefer something more relaxed? The countdown at Asiatique The Riverfront is festive yet family-friendly.
For an elegant night, secure a rooftop table at Banyan Tree or Lebua for a gala dinner with panoramic skyline views. Remember to book two months in advance.
And if you want to see the real Bangkok, hop on our evening tuk-tuk food tour through Chinatown. You'll taste Michelin-rated street eats while feeling the cool December breeze. It's local, flavorful, and full of fun.

2. Chiang Mai – A Festive Cultural Retreat
Chiang Mai CAD New Year Countdown FestivalDecember in Chiang Mai is cool and crisp.
Unlike bustling Bangkok, Chiang Mai doesn't have giant Christmas trees or glamorous parties. Instead, it offers a cozy, culture-rich holiday that feels warm and authentic.
The city glows with Lanna-style charm: strings of lights, paper lanterns, and handmade crafts give the Old City a village-like festive atmosphere.
The highlight of the month is the CAD New Year Countdown Festival. For the best views, book early or join one of our guided tours.

3. Which island to visit in December?
Our customers enjoyed the sunny beach in Thailand.December is the perfect time for Thailand's Andaman coast (west side). Phuket, Krabi, and Koh Lanta enjoy calm seas and plenty of sunshine.
On the Gulf of Thailand side (east side), Koh Samui might experience brief showers in early to mid-December. These usually last only 30–60 minutes, leaving plenty of sunshine for your beach days.
So, from a weather perspective, if you want 100% sunny beaches, head to the west coast. That's one reason Phuket is the busiest island this month — plus it offers a wide range of activities. For fewer crowds, Krabi is a great choice, with more nature and adventure experiences.
Koh Samui offers a quieter pace and luxury resorts, while Koh Lanta is perfect if you want complete seclusion.
Here's a quick overview of the islands in December:

Phuket – Classic & Lively Island
Phuket enjoys perfect weather in Dec.The Patong Beach New Year's Eve countdown is a big event. It's wild and very crowded. If you're traveling with kids or prefer a quieter celebration, we don't recommend it.
Instead, head to Karon or Kata Beach for a calmer vibe. You can enjoy a cliffside dinner at Karon Viewpoint or Kata Noi, sometimes with small fireworks — still festive, but without the chaos.
Many top resorts, like Katathani or The Racha, host elegant Christmas Eve beach feasts under the stars.
Or, if you want something more exclusive, book our private long-tail boat. Celebrate with a sunset champagne cruise, 360° ocean views, and calm, mirror-like waters. A truly luxurious and peaceful experience.
Enjoy an exclusive tour with our private long-tail boat in Phuket. If you love nature, don't miss a day trip to the Similan Islands. December brings some of the clearest waters and most stable weather, perfect for diving or snorkeling. See more things to do in Phuket in December.
Krabi – Nature & Cozy Celebrations
Phra-Nang Cave in KrabiDecember is perfect for adventure in Krabi.
Whether you're rock climbing at Railay Beach or kayaking through the mangroves, it's always fun. For island-hopping, skip the crowded Four Islands Tour and go for the quieter Hong Island instead.
Krabi's Christmas and New Year celebrations are cozy and relaxed.
You can catch small fireworks along On-Nang Beach or enjoy a laid-back live music party on Railay Beach.
If you love local vibes, I recommend spending an evening at Krabi Town Night Market. You'l taste authentic food, shop for crafts, and soak up the festive decorations.
And for something truly special, we can book a private tour of Phang Nga Bay on Christmas or New Year's Eve. You'll be far from the crowds, toast to the year's end, and enjoy complete peace and privacy.
Koh Samui – Relaxed & Luxurious

Koh Samui moves at a slower, more refined pace, with plenty of luxury resorts to choose from.
On Christmas Eve, many top resorts like Four Seasons or W Koh Samui host special gala dinners right on the beach. You'll get a gourmet meal with fire dancers performing nearby. Just remember to book months in advance, and it usually costs around $200–$400 per person.
For a local festive vibe, head to the New Year's Night Market at Bophut Fisherman's Village. For the best experience, stay in Bophut or nearby Mae Nam, and aim to arrive by 5:30 PM to beat the crowds. You can secure a seaside dinner spot and enjoy the live music or street performances.
December is also one of the best months to spot whale sharks around Samui. You can book a specialized whale shark-watching speedboat tour for a thrilling ocean adventure.
If the occasional shower hits, don't worry. Treat yourself to a world-class spa or cozy up in a seaside café and enjoy the view.
Koh Lanta – Secluded Escape
Enjoy peaceful in Koh Lanta.Koh Lanta is perfect for those seeking solitude and a slow pace. December weather is ideal, with calm seas and warm sunny days.
You can catch stunning sunsets on nearly empty beaches at the southern national park. Or take a boat trip to Koh Rok or Koh Haa for crystal-clear waters and colorful coral. Even in high season, these spots stay relatively quiet.
For festive evenings, many beach restaurants offer Christmas and New Year dinners with candlelight, soft music, and fire dance shows.
The only downside? Getting here takes time, about 3 hours from Krabi Airport, including a short car-ferry crossing. But once you arrive, you'll see why it's worth the journey. We can help you book a private transfer for a smoother trip.

What to Wear & Pack for Thailand in December
December is one of the most comfortable months to travel around Thailand — warm days, cooler nights, and much less humidity. You'll be outdoors a lot, so light, breathable clothing is key.
For the day:
Pack light cotton or linen clothes — shorts, T-shirts, sundresses, and sandals are perfect for exploring cities, beaches, or temples. A hat and sunglasses are must-haves, and don't forget sunscreen — the sun is still strong even in December.
For the evening:
Bring a light jacket or shawl, especially if you're heading north to Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai, where nights can drop to 15°C (59°F). Air-conditioned hotels and transport can also feel chilly.
For temple visits:
You'll need modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees. A scarf or light wrap works great if you're wearing shorts or sleeveless tops.
