How to Plan a Trip to Da Nang: Best Time & Day Trips

Written by Rita Updated Jul. 8, 2025

If you're wondering whether to include Da Nang in your Vietnam itinerary, you're not alone.

Many travelers scroll past it, thinking it's "just a modern beach city." But Da Nang has its own rhythm: quieter than Ho Chi Minh City, more open than Hanoi, and a perfect balance of beach time, easy day trips, and surprisingly good food.

This guide will walk you through how to make the most of Da Nang—whether you're looking for a 2-day break or using it as a hub to explore Central Vietnam.

When's the Best Time to Visit Da Nang?

Weather-wise, February to May is the best time to visit Da Nang. It's our go-to pick for couples, first-time visitors, or culture-focused travelers. You can enjoy clear skies, warm-but-not-hot days (low 30°C / 86°F), and fewer tourists compared to summer.

June to August brings Vietnam's summer break and the most beach-friendly weather. You could find full access to beach services, water sports, and the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival (weekends in June and July). Just be prepared for the heat and more holidaymakers.

September to December is Da Nang's rainy season. September offers low-season rates and late-summer sun. October and November are less predictable, with heavy rains and typhoon risks. We recommend staying flexible or heading inland, like northern Vietnam.

Planning a winter getaway? Late December through January brings milder weather, averaging 28°C/82°F, and festive lights, especially around New Year. But be prepared for some rainy days as it's the tail end of the monsoon, and it's not the beach season as well.

What to Do in Da Nang

Forget the usual "Top 10" lists—let's look at what Da Nang has to offer depending on how you like to travel:

If You're a First-Timer

Da Nang's cityscape is refreshingly modern. Don't miss the Dragon Bridge and the evening riverside walk. Every Saturday and Sunday at 9 p.m., this iconic bridge "breathes fire" over the Han River. It's fun, free, and always a hit with kids (and grown-ups who like a good photo).

The Marble Mountains are often on the list, a cluster of limestone peaks with hidden caves, shrines, and panoramic views of the city and sea. Just note: the many steep stairs can be challenging for travelers with mobility issues.

For a more relaxed day, head to My Khe Beach. It's clean, swimmable, and less "resortified" than nearby beaches—with options for surfing, paddleboarding, or just sunbathing.

If You're Traveling with Teens or Older Kids

Ba Na Hills makes for a fun, low-effort day trip: a scenic cable car, whimsical European architecture, and the iconic "Golden Bridge" held by giant stone hands — perfect for Instagram and family albums alike.

If You're a Couple

Da Nang's romantic side is quieter than Hoi An's, but just as rewarding. Relax on the beach, book a private spa, or hop on a scooter along the coast to Son Tra Peninsula. At sunset, you'll see the Lady Buddha looking over the sea, and if you're lucky, some wild monkeys too.

If You Love Culture or History

The Museum of Cham Sculpture is a small but insightful museum that's often missed. Many American visitors enjoy connecting this to their broader Vietnam War–era interest.

If you enjoy ancient ruins and off-the-path experiences, take a half-day trip to My Son Sanctuary, the Cham-era temples set among jungle hills. Go early to beat the heat and tie in a stop at a local village market for a taste of rural life.

Easy Day Trips from Da Nang

Da Nang is perfectly placed for short escapes that layer in history and culture.

Hoi An is the obvious choice—just 40 minutes away and a favorite for its lantern-lit streets, hands-on activities, and countryside views. Many travelers do it as a day trip, but we often recommend staying overnight to fully soak in its charm.

For the scenery lovers, a drive across Hai Van Pass delivers sweeping views and a taste of Vietnam's dramatic coastline.

And if you have a full day and enjoy history, Hue makes a solid (though long) day trip—ideal for travelers who want a deeper look into Vietnam's imperial past.

How Long Should You Stay in Da Nang?

If Da Nang is your main stop, plan on 2–3 nights. That gives you time to enjoy the beach, check out the mountain views, and get a feel for the city's laid-back rhythm—without rushing.

If you're just passing through, 1–2 nights can still make for a meaningful pause between Hue and Hoi An. And if you're flying in or out of central Vietnam, Da Nang's airport makes logistics easy.

3-Day Da Nang Sample Itinerary

Here's a suggested structure that works for most first-time visitors, especially couples or families looking for a mix of ease and experience:

Day 1: Arrival & City Sights

  • Arrive and settle in at a beachside hotel
  • Late afternoon stroll along the Han River
  • Dinner near Dragon Bridge, catch the weekend fire show (Sat & Sun only)

Day 2: Mountains & Sea

  • Morning visit to the Marble Mountains (go early to avoid crowds)
  • Afternoon at My Khe Beach or a spa break
  • Sunset from Son Tra Peninsula (optional short hike or lookout point)
  • Seafood dinner or drinks at a rooftop bar

Day 3: Day Trip

  • Option 1: Ba Na Hills full-day trip (great for families)
  • Option 2: My Son Sanctuary + local village visit (for history lovers)
  • Option 3: Transfer to Hoi An in the afternoon and stay there for 1–2 nights

Tip: If you're continuing to Hue, consider taking the scenic route via Hai Van Pass—best done by private car with photo stops.

Where to Stay in Da Nang

Most of Da Nang's top resorts line the beach, with My Khe Beach being the most popular spot to stay. There, you'll easily find ocean-view rooms, family-friendly suites, and a relaxed beach vibe—plus, it's easy to catch a Grab into the city for dinner or sightseeing. Boutique resorts like TMS Hotel Da Nang Beach and Hyatt Regency Danang Resort & Spa are excellent picks.

If you're after something truly special, splurge on the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort. Tucked into the hills of the Son Tra Peninsula, it's secluded and peaceful, and has its own private beach—ideal for a romantic or once-in-a-lifetime stay.

How to Get to Da Nang & Get Around

Da Nang is home to one of Vietnam's most traveler-friendly airports—Da Nang International (DAD), just 10–15 minutes from both the city center and the beach.

Direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane (8–9 hours) make it a favorite for Australian travelers. Regional routes from Seoul, Tokyo, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur run daily. From the US, no direct flights yet, but easy one-stop connections via major Asian hubs keep it straightforward.

Once you land, getting around is straightforward. Within the city, Grab (Vietnam's answer to Uber) is your go-to for short rides and quick trips.

But for families or anyone with a packed sightseeing day like Ba Na Hills, My Son, or Son Tra Peninsula, a private driver often makes more sense. It takes the hassle out of navigating or haggling in a new city.

How Much Does It Cost for a Trip to Da Nang?

If you're going the DIY route, Da Nang can be done for around $50–70 per person per day, including budget stays, local food, and public transport.

But for travelers who value comfort, efficiency, and deeper experiences, a private tour offers better support without breaking the bank. For a private tour with 4–5-star hotels, expect to spend $110–150 per person per day. This typically includes a private guide, transfers, entrance tickets, and well-rated accommodations.
