If you're checking the Chiang Mai weather in July, the rain icons might worry you. I felt the same on my first trip. But even on a week-long visit, not a single day was ruined.
Showers are usually intense but short, and they bring a refreshing break from the heat. Plus, fewer crowds and lower prices make July a surprisingly good time to explore the city.
Read on to see what the city really feels like during the rainy season.
Chiang Mai's Weather and Climate in July
- Average daily highs: 31°C (88°F)
- Average daily lows: 24°C (75°F)
- Average precipitation: 120.4 mm (4.7 in)
- Sunny days: 16
- Rainy days: 15
In July, Chiang Mai is warm, with daytime highs around 31°C (88°F). Humidity sits at 79%, so it can feel closer to 35°C (95°F) in the afternoon. Take shade or go indoors from 11 am to 3 pm, when heat and humidity peak.
In early July, showers usually appear once or twice every other day, mostly in the afternoons and evenings.
By mid-month, downpours arrive more often and more intensely, though they rarely last all day. When the rain is heavy, low-lying streets like Chang Khlan Road may occasionally flood briefly.
Up in the mountains, it is cooler at a pleasant 23°C (73°F). As July rains continue, waterfalls grow fuller and the hills turn even greener. Just keep in mind the weather can change quickly, and fog sometimes hides the best viewpoints.

What to Wear in July
Light, loose-fitting stuff is your friend in humid weather. Pick breathable fabrics (linen, cotton) so you don't feel like you're melting.
If you're visiting temples, long pants + sleeves help you keep respectful.
Also, bring a lightweight rain jacket or umbrella for those surprise downpours.

1. Chill Out & Explore a Hidden Hill Tribe in Doi Inthanon
Doi Inthanon is considered Chiang Mai's ultimate July escape. When the city bakes at 32°C, the mountain tops sit cool around 23°C—instant relief.
Take a leisurely walk through the lush tropical jungle and see birds flitting about. If rainy, it feels straight out of Jurassic Park.
Note that some unpaved trails, like Kew Mae Pan, close in July, and others can get slippery and muddy. Stick to maintained paths and plan hikes for the drier mornings.
After exploring the trails, our little secret bonus awaits at Maeklang Luang Karen Village. There, locals in traditional dress weave cloth, feed pigs, and—if you visit in early July—plant rice. Want to try? Our guide will make it happen.

Look no further than elephant encounters this July in Chiang Mai. Short rains make them extra playful, and smaller groups mean more private interactions.
Still, camps with small groups, like Elephant Nature Park, still fill up quickly. Reserve at least 1 month before to lock in your spot.
For an even smoother experience, stick to camps closer to the city to avoid muddy mountain roads, like Kanta Elephant Sanctuary, and plan a morning visit when the weather is drier and cooler.

Bua Tong Sticky Waterfall is a welcome escape from that midday 31°C (88°F) heat in July. Even a sudden shower just adds to the fun!
In this natural playground, climb barefoot, splash through the water, and scramble along ropes like little adventurers.
Here's a little insider tip: start your day at nearby elephant camps, like Kanta Elephant Sanctuary, just a quick 30-minute drive away, then swing by the waterfall in the afternoon to cool off.

Cooking classes are hands-down one of the best ways to stay dry in July—and honestly, one of the most fun ways to connect.
Instead of a regular cooking school, we chose a farm-to-table class in a real Thai home. You'll explore their charming stilted house, pick fresh herbs from the garden, and cook alongside the host, learning family secrets along the way.
